Introduce the Fruit of the Spirit Patience
The scripts throughout this lesson are italicized and in quotations. Feel free to adapt as needed.
“Today, we will be learning more about the Fruit of the Spirit. What do you already know about the Fruit of the Spirit? Which fruits have we already learned and practiced? Were any easy to live out? Did any feel hard?
Pull out the Fruit of the Spirit Printable (grab the download above), and point to each fruit as you review them.
“Let’s review. So far we’ve learned about love, joy, and peace. We know that when we love Jesus and try to be like him, the Holy Spirit produces fruit within us. It is called the Fruit of the Spirit because each fruit comes from the _______.” See if they can fill in the blank with “Holy Spirit”!
So, today we will learn about the fourth Fruit of the Spirit, which is patience.
Have your child say “patience” out loud and then find “patience” on the free printable.
“What is patience? What does it look like to be patient?”
“Patience is like waiting with a happy heart. You know when you’re excited about something, like a yummy snack or your turn on the swing? Waiting calmly and not getting upset is being patient. It’s like a special power God gives us to stay calm and happy while we wait. So, when you wait your turn or for something special, you’re using your super patience power!”
Sing a Song
“Let’s watch this video and learn about the Fruit of the Spirit Patience from Herbert the Snail.”
Read a Bible Story (Fruit of the Spirit Patience)
Let’s turn this Bible story into a full blown lesson!
Open your Beginner’s Bible to page 46 (the story of The Visitors). If you don’t have this Bible, you can read it here, Genesis 18; 21. Or, read a similar version from another children’s Bible.
Before reading the story, look at the pictures with your child and encourage them to make predictions: “What do you think this story is about? How do you think this story relates to the Fruit of the Spirit Patience?”
Then read it, and ask your child predictive questions throughout: “What do you think will happen next? If they do that, what might happen? What would you do? “
Relate it back to the Fruit of the Spirit Patience: “Abraham and Sarah wanted to have a baby for a long time, and God promised that they would. But they grew very old, like grandma and grandpa’s age, and Sarah thought it was impossible for her to have a baby anymore. That’s why Sarah laughed when the visitors said that she would have a son. However, when God promises something, He always follows through. Sarah and Abraham had to wait very patiently for God to fulfill His promise and give them a baby.
Hands-On Activity
“Today, we will be taste testing some fruit! First, we’ll taste an unripe, green banana. Then, we’ll try the ripe, yellow one. What do you think the green one will taste like? What about the yellow one?”
Try the green banana with your child.
“What do you think? How did it taste?”
Then try the yellow banana.
“How does this one taste? Which one tasted better? Why did the yellow banana taste better?”
“The yellow one was sweet because it was ripe. When we have green bananas, we wait for them to ripen before we eat them. It’s much sweeter if we wait, but it can be hard to wait patiently sometimes. Sometimes, we’re so impatient that we eat a banana when it’s not completely ripe yet, but it doesn’t taste as good that way.
“Life is a bit like that. Sometimes, when we really, really want something and can’t wait, it might not turn out as good as if we had waited patiently. With God’s help, we can have the Fruit of the Spirit Patience. We just need to ask Him for it.”
“We can say, ‘God, please give me patience. Help me wait patiently,’ and He will help us!”
Watch a Video Lesson
“Now, we’re going to watch a video about what the Bible says about the Fruit of the Spirit Patience.”‘
After the short lesson, there are discussion questions and a prayer.
Challenge: How Can We Live Out the Fruit of the Spirit Patience?
At least 3 times this week, when you are struggling, model asking God for patience out loud in front of your child. It could just be, “God, please give me patience. Help me wait patiently.” You can put it in your own words, but keep it simple and consistent.
Your child will learn how to pray this simple prayer by hearing you model it time and time again.
When your child is being impatient, encourage them to say this prayer too. If they are uninterested, that’s okay. Don’t push it. They will catch on by listening to you model it.
“Remember, patience is like a special power God gives us to stay calm and happy while we wait. So, when you wait your turn or for something special, you’re using your super patience power! That’s what the Fruit of the Spirit Patience is about!”
