Introduce the Fruit of the Spirit Goodness

“So, there are 9 Fruits of the Spirit, and we are learning about the sixth one today, the Fruit of the Spirit Goodness! What does it mean to be good?”

“The Fruit of the Spirit Goodness is not just about being good though, it’s about having a warm, tingling feeling inside us that makes us want to do good things.”

“It’s like a small, but powerful voice in our heart that says, ‘Let me do what’s right and good because I love God!'”

“Isn’t that amazing? The desire to be good comes from the Fruit of the Spirit Goodness.”

“So, what do you think? Are you ready for some goodness adventures?”

Grab some scarves or play silks and dance to the song Music Machine: The Fruit of the Spirit.

Read a Bible Story (Fruit of the Spirit Goodness)

Let’s turn this Bible story into a full blown lesson!

Open your Beginner’s Bible to page 240 (the story of The Brave Queen). If you don’t have this Bible, you can read it here Esther 1-10, or use another Bible.

Before reading the story, look at the pictures with your child and encourage them to make predictions: “What do you think this story is about? How do you think this story relates to the Fruit of the Spirit Goodness?”

Then read it, and ask your child predictive questions throughout: “What do you think will happen next? If they do that, what might happen? What would you do?

Now, relate it back to the Fruit of the Spirit Goodness: “Queen Esther was a real-life superhero who showed us the power of the Fruit of the Spirit Goodness!”

“In the story, Queen Esther had a choice to make. She could have hidden and pretended not to be Jewish to stay safe. But, you know what she did?”

“She decided to do the good thing! She stood up for her people and tried to save them.”

“That’s like a big, brave superhero move, right?”

“So, when we talk about making good choices, it’s like activating that power in our heart that makes us want to do good things, just like Queen Esther.”

“Isn’t that cool? Who’s ready to activate their goodness power like Queen Esther today?”

    Hands-On Activity

“In everything we do, there are good and bad choices. In this activity, we will focus on what’s good and bad to eat, exploring the concept of goodness.”

“For example, a magazine would be bad to eat, right? What else should never be eaten? What is good to eat?”

“Let’s look through this magazine and cut out items that are good and bad to eat.”

“Then we will glue them to this poster board, helping us understand the importance of making good choices, guided by the Fruit of the Spirit Goodness.”

Divide your poster with a line down the middle. On the left side at the top, sketch a poison symbol (a skull and crossbones) or another appropriate symbol for items that are not suitable to eat. On the right side at the top, draw a checkmark to signify food that is good to eat.

During this activity, ask these questions to further explain the Fruit of the Spirit Goodness:

    • “How do you know what’s safe to eat, and what’s unsafe to eat?”
    • “Choosing what to eat is just one decision among many in our day. What are some other types of decisions we need to make?”
    • “Can you think of a time when you had to choose between doing something good and doing something bad?”

Relate it to the God’s Word:

“Similar to how we’re making choices about what’s good for our bodies, God guides us to make choices that reflect goodness in our hearts.”

“So, as we decide what to eat, we’re also learning about the Fruit of the Spirit Goodness that God wants us to have inside. We’re making good choices not just for our bodies, but for our spirits too.”

    Watch a Video Lesson

“Now, let’s check out this video about the Fruit of the Spirit Goodness.”

After the short lesson, there are discussion questions and a prayer.

Challenge: How Can We Live Out the Fruit of the Spirit Goodness?

“This week, we will have more goodness adventures because of the Fruit of the Spirit Goodness.”

“Remember, goodness is not just about behaving a certain way, it’s about wanting to do good things because we love God so much!”

Challenge yourself and your kids to do 3 good deeds for others this week inspired by the Fruit of the Spirit Goodness. Discuss with your child how you felt doing your good deeds, and ask them how they felt.

And that’s it! You’ve completed the Fruit of the Spirit Goodness lesson!
