Introduce the Fruit of the Spirit Love
The scripts throughout this lesson are italicized and in quotations. Feel free to adapt as needed.
“Do you love fruit? What’s your favorite fruit? “
“Have you heard of the Fruit of the Spirit? This is different from the fruit we eat. When we love Jesus and try to be like him, the Holy Spirit produces this fruit within us. They are called Fruit of the Spirit because they come from the Holy Spirit.“
Show them the Fruit of the Spirit Printable (find it above). Read the verse and help your child find each “fruit” in the tree.
“Today, we will be learning about the first Fruit of the Spirit ‘love’. What does love mean? What does it look like to love someone?“
Sing a Song
“Did you know that Jesus loves you and me very much? Let’s start by singing a song about his love for us!”
Grab some scarves or play silks and then sing and twirl to the song Jesus Loves Me.
Extension: Sing the song again, and change the words to “Jesus helps me”.
Read a Bible Story
Let’s turn this Bible story into a full blown lesson!
Open your Beginner’s Bible to page 340 (the story of Two Miracles). If you don’t have this Bible, you can read it from this link Matthew 9:18-26. Or, use another children’s Bible, and read any story about Jesus healing someone.
Before reading the story, look at the pictures with your child and encourage them to make predictions:“What do you think this story is about?”
Then read it, and ask your child predictive questions throughout: “What do you think will happen next? If they do that, what might happen? What would you do? “
Relate it back to the Fruit of the Spirit Love: “Jesus healed people because He loved them. We cannot heal people like He did, but we can help people when they are sick or hurt. That’s one way we can show that we love others because of the Fruit of the Spirit love that’s inside us.“
Hands-On Activity
Grab your child’s favorite stuffed animal, and some first aid kit supplies (ex. Band-Aids, ice pack, wipes, tissues).
Tell your child a story about how their animal got hurt. “Oh no, look at (stuffed animal’s name). He was running too fast and he tripped. He scraped his knee and his elbow. He’s bleeding and he’s crying. What can we do to help him?
Brainstorm some ways your child can help their stuffed animal:
- Apply an ice pack
- Clean the wounds with a wipe
- Apply Band-Aids
- Offer tissues for wiping away tears
- Give a hug
- Give some water
- Ask, “What can I get you?”
Let your child take care of the stuffed animal using the items you provided.
Watch a Video Lesson
“Now, we’re going to watch a video about what the Bible says about the Fruit of the Spirit ‘Love”‘
After the short lesson, there are discussion questions and a prayer.
Challenge: How Can We Live Out the Fruit of the Spirit Love?
Remind your kids of a time when you helped them when they were sick or hurt. Were any of their friends or family members sick recently? What did they do to make them feel better? What can they do differently next time?
Challenge both yourself and your child with a practical deed to love someone well this week.
“Remember, we help people because we love them. Jesus helps us too because he loves us. That’s what the first Fruit of the Spirit Love is about!”
