Introduce the Fruit of the Spirit Joy
The scripts throughout this lesson are italicized and in quotations. Feel free to adapt as needed.
“Today, we will be learning more about the Fruit of the Spirit. Remember, when we love Jesus and try to be like him, the Holy Spirit produces fruit within us. It is called the Fruit of the Spirit because they come from the Holy Spirit.“

“So, we already learned about the first Fruit of the Spirit ‘Love‘. The second Fruit of the Spirit is joy.
Have them say “joy” out loud and find it on the Printable.
“Now, what does joy mean?”
“Well, joy is a super happy feeling that makes your heart dance with excitement. You know that giggly, jumping feeling when you play with your favorite toys or see your best friend? That’s joy! It’s a warm and fuzzy feeling that makes everything extra special. So, when you’re having lots of fun or cuddling with someone you love, that’s joy in your heart.”
Sing a Song
“Let’s show our joy and excitement while we sing and jump to this song!”
Grab some scarves or play silks and play the song I’ve Got the Joy Joy Joy Joy Down in My Heart.
Read a Bible Story
Let’s turn this Bible story into a full blown lesson!
Open your Beginner’s Bible to page 277 (the story Shepherds Visit). If you don’t have this Bible, you can read it from this link Luke 2:8-20 . Or, use another children’s Bible.
Before reading the story, look at the pictures with your child and encourage them to make predictions:“What do you think this story is about?”
Then read it, and ask your child predictive questions throughout: “What do you think will happen next? If they do that, what might happen? What would you do? “
Relate it back to the Fruit of the Spirit Joy: “The shepherds were full of joy when they heard the Savior Jesus was born. They were so excited! Jesus is God’s greatest gift to us. Because of Jesus, we can go to heaven and be with God! This good news is the reason for our joy. “
“Also, God calls us to share that joy with others. What’s so great is that when we share our joy with others, we’re sharing God’s love. That’s the whole reason Jesus came to us in the first place! He wants us to share our love and joy with others!”
Now, how can we practice the Fruit of the Spirit Joy?
Hands-On Activity
In our busy lives, we often forget the joy nature brings. If we spend time observing God’s creation, it will inspire awe for the Lord in both us and our children.
Go for a quiet walk and find joy in what God has made.
“To practice the Fruit of the Spirit ‘Joy’, we’re going for a walk. We will look for things that God made. God made all living things. Before we go, can you name some things that God has made? Now, which living things do you think we might see on our walk?
When you find a living creature or thing, ask it, “Who made you?” Have your child answer for it, “God did.” Point out the fascinating features that the thing has. Point out the joy that you and your child feel while exploring God’s creations!
Watch a Video Lesson
“Now, we’re going to watch a video about what the Bible says about the Fruit of the Spirit ‘Joy‘”
After the short lesson, there are discussion questions and a prayer.
Challenge: How Can We Live Out the Fruit of the Spirit Joy?
Discuss moments that make you and your child feel joy.
“How do we show joy?” Examples include: smiling, laughing, jumping, clapping, dancing
“This week, our challenge is to look for feelings of joy. If you are feeling happy and giggly, say, ‘I’m feeling joy right now!’ If you see someone else feeling joy, point it out!
“Remember, we can feel joy because God loves us and we will be with Him in heaven one day.”
“That’s what the second Fruit of the Spirit Joy is about!”
